Otolaryngology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the ears, nose, throat, and head and neck region. At Life Clinic in Bergamo, our team of highly trained otolaryngologists offers advanced care for a wide range of conditions, from the most common to the most complex disorders.
Our ENT in Bergamo treats a variety of conditions, including:
Although the different parts may seem unrelated, pathologies affecting the various organs in the ENT sphere of interest may be affected by contiguous pathological, infectious, traumatic, or tumor processes and require diagnostic and/or therapeutic interventions by a single specialist.
Diseases most often treated by the otolaryngologist include diseases of the oro-pharynx (tonsillitis, fibroids, papillomas, bacterial infections), diseases of the larynx (vocal cord nodules and polyps, chordal paralysis), diseases of the salivary glands (sialolithiasis), diseases of the outer, middle, and inner ear (otitis, tympanic perforations, otosclerosis, vertigo, tinnitus, deafness), and inflammatory diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses with all septal malformations and all head-neck tumor diseases.
At Life Clinic, we use the latest diagnostic technologies for accurate evaluation of ENT conditions. The diagnostic pathway begins with a thorough specialist examination, including exploration of the oral cavity, ear, and palpation of the neck.
Depending on your needs, our ENT specialist in Bergamo can perform advanced instrumental examinations, such as:
These examinations allow us to accurately identify the cause of symptoms and develop a targeted and effective treatment plan.
WHAT IS AUDIOMETRIC EXAMINATION?
Tonal audiometric testing or audiometry, is an examination that can provide information about hearing ability. This exam allows for the detection of any loss of hearing perception.
The examination has no contraindications and can be performed by adults and children, is not a painful or invasive examination, and is not dangerous to hearing.
The tonal audiometric examination involves the use of a pair of headphones to be placed over the ears to which sounds will be sent--starting with low tones and working up to high tones--and the patient will be asked to press a button as often as he or she perceives the sound: in this way the doctor will be able to determine the subject's threshold of minimum audibility. The examination may also involve the use of a device that is placed on the bone behind the ear and that precisely through the bone transmits vibrations directly to the inner ear.
Through the subject's ability to pick up sounds, the specialist is able to assess the function of the outer ear and middle ear. Through the use of vibrations, on the other hand, the functionality of the inner ear is assessed.
Based on the results obtained on a chart, our ENT specialist will be able to recommend the most appropriate therapy for the various hearing deficits detected.
WHAT IS FIBROSCOPY
Fibroscopy is an investigation performed with a thin, flexible, fiber-optic endoscope with the presence of a built-in microcamera that allows us to see and study the mucous membranes of the nasal cavities, nasopharynx, and pharyngolarynx, as well as the possible presence of lesions and the motility of the above structures. Fibroscopy can be nasal or laryngeal, depending on the cavity one wishes to explore, and it also allows one to observe the movement of the vocal cords without resorting to tongue-pulling and mirroring as is the case in the classic examination.
The examination is performed for the diagnosis and study of diseases of the larynx and vocal cords (vocal cord paralysis, polyps, nodules, granulomas, benign and malignant tumors, ulcers), pharynx (adenoid hyperplasia, throat tumor), and in cases of nasal cavity obstruction such as in rhinosinusitis or in suspicion of foreign bodies.
Fibroscopy involves the use of a fiber-optic instrument that is inserted into the nasal cavities. It does not involve anesthesia and is not painful. The examination is of short duration and no preparation is required.
There are no contraindications to performing the examination in pediatric children. For the child, in general, fibroscopy is essential in the diagnosis of nasal obstructive diseases such as adenoid hypertrophy (adenoids).
Our otolaryngologists are constantly updated on the latest research and technology in the field to ensure patients receive the most effective and safe care.
