This generic term refers to pain affecting the Vertebral Column, localized in the spinal, lumbar, and/or sacral region (the two most affected spine sections).
The causes of this pain can be varied, because different structures make up the spine.
The latter consists of the facet joints between the vertebrae (zygapophyseal), intervertebral discs, ligaments and myofascial structures.
Many of these structures receive the same innervation, so the localization of pain in one area, may be given by the pathology of one or more of the structures present.
Starting from this very concept, we understand the importance of the Pain Therapy (algological) examination, the purpose of which is precisely to identify the exact structure involved in the genesis of the symptomatology.
To confirm the presumed diagnosis made during the examination, infiltration under ultrasound guidance comes to the rescue.
If a period, longer or shorter, of painlessness ensued after this infiltration, it is a sign that the diagnosis was correct and that the infiltration served not only as a test but also as a true initial treatment.
